Unlikely Collaborators
A celestial migration of moths as an unlikely wayfinding strategy.
The Unlikely Collaborators project challenged our team to reimagine traditional wayfinding, creating an intuitive yet subtle path for guests from the elevator to the Zen Garden. The client sought to avoid conventional wall signage, opting for an artistic solution that would enhance the space. Inspired by a striking moth-patterned wallpaper near the elevators, we partnered with Santa Monica artist Erin Male to transform this motif into a dynamic art installation. Over 100 handcrafted moths were meticulously created, each varying in detail and design. These moths appeared to emerge from the wallpaper, forming a captivating swarm that gracefully guided visitors around the corner to the open-air Zen Garden. The moths closest to the wallpaper mirrored its intricate patterns, establishing a clear visual connection.
As the moths ascended towards the ceiling, their designs became progressively more subtle, creating a sense of movement and direction. This gradual shift in detail served to naturally lead guests towards the garden, fostering a sense of discovery. The installation seamlessly integrated art and function, transforming a simple journey into an engaging experience. The project successfully replaced traditional signage with a unique, visually compelling solution, enhancing the aesthetic and flow of the space. This collaboration exemplified how art can effectively serve as a functional design element, enriching the user experience in unexpected ways.
