Applied Materials
Material Alchemy
This sculptural centerpiece at the Applied Materials Executive Briefing Center was envisioned to capture the elemental transformation of sand into raw silicon, culminating in a silicone wafer. The concept called for more than visual appeal; the composition serves as a brand statement, rooted in material science and storytelling. Gensler turned to WeidnerCA to bring this vision to life. WeidnerCA collaborated with artist Ember de Boer to craft over 300 custom resin forms, each hand-sculpted to mimic the stages of silicon refinement.
The resulting domes and spheres were cast in resin and arranged across a gradient wall to suggest molecular formation and energy in motion. From strategy to installation, this project demanded precision, experimentation, and partnership. The final artwork not only anchors the space visually but also communicates Applied Materials’ ethos: turning raw potential into technological impact. It’s a celebration of process, craft, and identity, now woven seamlessly into the architecture.
